Accessibility Statement
We believe education should be accessible to everyone. This statement explains how we work to ensure our digital platforms are inclusive and usable by all.
Accessibility Standards
We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. These guidelines, developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), are the internationally recognised standard for web accessibility.
WCAG 2.1 Level AA compliance means our website and platforms are designed to be:
- Perceivable — Information and interface components must be presentable to users in ways they can perceive (through sight, sound, or touch)
- Operable — Interface components and navigation must be operable by all users, including those using keyboards, screen readers, or other assistive technologies
- Understandable — Information and operation of the interface must be understandable, with clear language and predictable behaviour
- Robust — Content must be robust enough to be interpreted reliably by a wide variety of user agents, including assistive technologies
We also follow guidance from the European Accessibility Act (EAA) and Section 508 of the US Rehabilitation Act where applicable.
Accessibility Features
We have implemented the following accessibility features across our website and platforms:
Semantic HTML
Proper heading structure, landmarks, and semantic elements help screen readers navigate content logically.
Keyboard Navigation
All interactive elements are accessible via keyboard. Tab order follows a logical sequence.
Focus Indicators
Clear, visible focus indicators show which element is currently selected when navigating by keyboard.
Colour Contrast
Text and interactive elements meet WCAG AA contrast ratios (4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text).
Responsive Design
Content adapts to different screen sizes and supports zoom up to 200% without loss of functionality.
Alt Text for Images
All meaningful images include descriptive alternative text. Decorative images are marked appropriately.
Clear Language
We write in plain, clear language and avoid jargon. Reading level is appropriate for our international audience.
Reduced Motion
Animations are minimised or disabled for users who have enabled "reduce motion" in their system preferences.
Skip Links
A "Skip to main content" link appears when you start tabbing on any page, allowing keyboard users to bypass navigation and jump directly to the main content.
Form Accessibility
All form fields have associated labels, error messages are clearly announced, and required fields are indicated both visually and programmatically.
Assistive Technology Support
Our website and platforms are designed to work with common assistive technologies:
| Technology | Examples | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Screen Readers | NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, TalkBack | Supported |
| Screen Magnifiers | ZoomText, Windows Magnifier, macOS Zoom | Supported |
| Voice Control | Dragon NaturallySpeaking, Voice Control (macOS/iOS) | Supported |
| Keyboard-Only Navigation | Standard keyboards, switch devices | Supported |
| High Contrast Modes | Windows High Contrast, macOS Increase Contrast | Supported |
We test with NVDA and VoiceOver as part of our development process. If you experience issues with a specific assistive technology, please let us know.
Platform Accessibility
TEEI uses several platforms to deliver our programmes. Here's the accessibility status of each:
TEEI Website
Our main website (theeducationalequalityinstitute.org) is built with accessibility as a core requirement and aims to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA.
Kintell (Mentoring & Language Platform)
Kintell powers our Mentors for Ukraine and Language Connect for Ukraine programmes. The platform includes:
- Keyboard-accessible booking and scheduling
- Screen reader compatible mentor profiles and search
- Accessible video calling interface
- Mobile apps (iOS/Android) that follow platform accessibility guidelines
itslearning (Learning Management System)
Our LMS partner, itslearning, provides accessibility features including:
- Screen reader support
- Keyboard navigation
- Customisable display settings
- Alternative text for images in course content
Donation Platform
Our donation forms (powered by Fundraise Up) are designed to be accessible, with proper form labels and keyboard support.
Known Limitations
While we strive for full accessibility, we are aware of some current limitations:
Known Issues We're Working On
- Some older PDF documents may not be fully accessible. We are working to remediate these and provide accessible alternatives on request.
- Video content — We are progressively adding captions to video content. If you need captions for a specific video, please contact us.
- Third-party content — Some embedded content from third parties (e.g., social media feeds) may not meet our accessibility standards.
- Complex data visualisations — Some charts and graphs may have limited accessibility. We provide text alternatives where possible.
We are committed to addressing these limitations. If you encounter an accessibility barrier, please report it and we will prioritise a solution.
Feedback and Support
We welcome your feedback on the accessibility of our website and platforms. If you encounter accessibility barriers, need content in an alternative format, or have suggestions for improvement, please contact us.
Contact Us About Accessibility
We aim to respond to accessibility feedback within 5 working days. If you need an urgent accommodation, please indicate this in your message.
Request an Accommodation
If you need content in an alternative format (e.g., large print, audio, or plain text), or require an accommodation to participate in our programmes, please let us know. We will work with you to find a solution.
