Find a Friend.
Feel at Home.

Core Values

Friendship, Not a Service

The Buddy Program is about mutual connection. Your buddy is a volunteer who wants to welcome you, not a professional caseworker or teacher.

What a Buddy Is

  • A friendly face to talk to
  • Someone to share experiences with
  • A guide to local culture and life
  • A supportive listener

What a Buddy Is Not

  • A professional therapist or counselor
  • A formal language teacher
  • A financial or legal advisor
  • A 24/7 on-call assistant

Common Questions

Is the Buddy Program free?

Yes. There is no cost to join for participants or volunteers.

How long until I get matched?

It depends on volunteer availability in your area or online. We prioritize matching based on shared interests and languages, so it might take a little time to find the right person.

What if my buddy and I do not connect well?

Chemistry is hard to predict! If you don't click, just let us know. We can help you find a new match, no hard feelings.

Do I need to speak English or Norwegian?

Not fluently. We try to match you with someone who speaks a language you are comfortable with, or someone patient who wants to help you practice.

Can my family join?

Yes! Family members can sign up individually. Many of our in-person events in Norway are family-friendly.

What is the difference between a buddy and a mentor?

A buddy is a friend for social support and belonging. A mentor (via Mentors for Ukraine) focuses specifically on professional goals like finding a job.
